An unparalleled portraitist

Although Goya’s work deals with numerous topics (religious art, war scenes, illustration of the barbarism of war, fantastical imagination), it was mainly thanks to his portraits that he established his reputation. Gifted with the ability to capture the personality of his models rather than just copying their physical features, he was interested in the psychology of his models and tried to show the truth behind the faces he painted on canvas.

The balance in his portraits and self-portraits reveals the thoughtfulness of his compositions and his impressive knowledge of anatomy. Moreover, his keen sense of observation allowed him to depict the intricacies of embroideries and lace with precision and finesse. He also tried to represent the different social types with realism and authenticity, as much in their attitudes as in their clothing. Despite his official commissions and the need to conform to the wishes of his patrons, Goya was confident enough to interpret his subjects in a daring and inventive way.
